Coral Pink Sand Dunes State park Review | Sand boarding

We visited the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park mid-may, and it was our first time experiencing sand boarding! We were in Las Vegas, and wanted to make a road trip starting in Zion National Park, then heading to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, and onto Bryce Canyon and the Bentonite Hills outside of Capitol Reef State Park.

We left from Zion National Park mid-morning, and drove about one hour to the sand dunes! We stayed in Hurricane, which is just outside of Zion at a very nice, budget-friendly hotel the Sleep Inn & Suites.

We felt like we were driving into the middle of no where! It was desert all around us, and mountains in the distance. It was really beautiful! We didn't have service for our cell phones when we left Hurricane, so we were thankful we downloaded the Google offline maps to find the Coral Pink Sand Dunes! That's a big tip ;)

After driving an hour, we arrived! There is a charge because it's a State Park, and it was only $15. It would have been $10 if we were residents to the state of Utah. The park is open during daylight hours, seven days a week. 90% of the sand dunes are open for ATV riders! The rest of the sand dunes are open for people to take photos, play in the sand, and sand board!

We rented our sand board for $25 for the entire day! We only rented one and shared between my husband and I. We parked in the parking lot, then when we got to the sand, we took out shoes off. You definitely want to make sure you do that!! Otherwise, your shoes will get all sandy and it's hard to walk. We left our shoes by the sidewalk, with everyone else's. I trusted that no one wanted to take my muddy tennis shoes lol.

We walked out to the largest sand dune! There are many ways to get there, so you can just follow any of the little paths in the sand. We walked barefoot and the sand was SO nice. It wasn't hot at all, and it felt like walking in powdered sugar!

It was a little difficult to make it to the very top! Each step forward in sand is a half a step backwards, so you kind of sink your way to the top, if you know what I mean! Plus, the Sand Dunes State Park is at 6,000 ft. elevation, so it was a little harder to breathe in general. I'd suggest bringing lots of water and purchasing oxygen. It honestly helps a lot! We live at 0 ft elevation in Hawaii, sea level beside the beach, so it was more difficult adjusting to the elevation differences.

Once we got to the very top, we took some photos! We wanted to take photos first, before we got all gross! Plus we wanted to get the photos out of the way, so we could just enjoy the boards and shred the sand :)

I've never been snowboarding or have any kind of experience doing that stuff!! So for me, this was ALL new! You don't wear shoes when sand boarding, so I put my feet into the board barefoot. Then, I slowly started down the sand dune! I put my hand behind me, to slow me down a bit. I went all the way to the bottom! The key is to sit low to the sand. Otherwise, you'll be more likely to fall. We witness a guy that got hurt by standing straight up, and he flipped up and over the board, which remained on his feet. So, it really hurt him. He was okay, and he got up and walked it off. But that's something that you need to be careful of. Again, this is my HONEST review!!

Sand boarding for me was SUPER fun! It was totally worth it. We went almost 10 times down the sand dune. The hardest part was honestly just walking up the sand dune after I went down. We went in mid-May, and the temperature was perfect. It was about 80 degrees! The sand was not hot at all to walk on. It was the perfect time of the year to go! As you can see in the photos below, a small rain storm came in the afternoon. It went right on past, and we didn't get rained on. It looks worse in the photo than it was in person. It was so relaxing sitting on top of the sand dune and watching the storm roll past, and taking some slides down the dune and walking back up. My husband and I really enjoyed this! We also watched the ATV's ride past us up and down the dunes in the distance.

This must add to your bucket list of things to do! :)
